New training in 2007
Spotlight Retail training
Didasko Learning Institute is providing new Retail traineeship training with Spotlight Australia. We have started training Spotlight retail staff in South Melbourne and will be undertaking sessions with participants at the Essendon and Fountain Gate stores in the coming weeks.
Spotlight is Australia’s largest chain of fabric, craft and home interiors superstores. With 100 stores in Australia, New Zealand and Singapore it provides millions of customers with a huge range of fashionable products at the most competitive prices.
Spotlight has a strong focus on employee training, with all staff undergoing extensive training to bring their customers valuable product knowledge and advice. Didasko is excited to be working with this leading fabric retailer as they enhance their employee’s expertise in satisfying a dynamic consumer demand for style and fashion.
Priceline Pharmacy training
Didasko has commenced delivery of Community Pharmacy training with Priceline Pharmacy. Working with the pharmacy chain’s parent company Australian Pharmaceutical Industries, we have developed a fully customised learning resource designed to meet the specific needs of Priceline pharmacy stores.
Didasko is delivering Certificate II and III in Retail Community Pharmacy. This course is customised for pharmacy retail staff to develop their expertise in providing non-therapeutic advice and recommendations. Trainees also develop skills in questioning and active listening as they provide an important link between patient and pharmacist.
We are very pleased to offer this new specialised course to Priceline and look forward to working with the new trainees in developing their knowledge and skills through positive learning experiences.

Computer Power course improvements
Computer Power has introduced new upgrades to its courseware for 2007 to ensure that its students graduate job ready.
The Diploma of Systems Technology (DST) has been improved to include the industry certifications A+ and Network+ as part of the standard curriculum. The introduction of these certifications strengthens the DST program and provides graduates with skills currently in demand by industry.
The Diploma of Business Systems is also improved to incorporate Visual Basic .NET. The new course outline is available from www.computerpower.ac.nz.
‘We continuously work with industry to develop programs to meet the skills shortage in the IT arena,’ said Computer Power Managing Director Dean Rogers. ‘This allows us to place our students in the
best jobs possible.’
Effective use of assessment tools
Recruitment assessment tools such as application forms, interviews, role plays, psychometric tests and reference checks play an important role in the selection process.
Yet all too often, employers and recruitment firms use testing tools that are not relevant or appropriate to the selection criteria of the job role. They simply use these tools because ‘that’s what we do here’ and ‘that’s all we have’.
Unfortunately this can sometimes be a result of laziness in not customising the selection strategy, methods and assessment tools appropriate to the job analysis and selection criteria of the job role. All too often we receive feedback from candidates (and especially experienced candidates) undertaking one or two sessions of 2–3 hour assessments on subject topics that are a minor or no part of their job role.
As an example, for accounting roles, the complete skills assessment menu to select from includes:
- Specific accounting areas – accounts payable/receivable, bookkeeper, forms and journals, inventory and depreciation, financial statements, cost accounting, maths skillsadvanced, MYOB, QuickBooks and Peachtree
- Application of software programs – MS Word, Excel (basic, intermediate or advanced).
Naturally you would only select and assess those core skill areas that are predominantly used within a normal working week and relevant to their responsibilities and tasks.
At Didasko People Solutions, we have access to over 800 different assessments, from the various skill assessments (administration, software, internet, retail sales, call centre, accounting) to behavioural profiling, MBTI, Situational Leadership and emotional intelligence.
For further information and options in assessments as part of your selection strategy, please contact Chris Curtis
or telephone (03) 9573 3900.
